Anglesea’s ‘exceptional’ effort a positive sign

- DAMIEN RACTLIFFE

ANGLESEA coach Paul Carson says his side’s ability to push one of the competition’s best in Geelong Amateur would hold his club in good stead.

The Roos were gallant in defeat, pressing back every time Ammos bridged a gap.

A goal after the three- quarter time siren to new recruit Jordan Erskine, which cut the deficit to nine points, gave the Seas the momentum going into the final term, and while class shone out in the end, Carson said he was proud of his troops.

“I thought our effort was exceptional,” he said. “The result clearly didn’t go our way but I really felt like we were in that game right until the end.

“Some decision making, some skill errors, if we can fine-tune those things during the week, I think it’s promising, to make us feel we’re not far away.”

Carson said there were plenty of positives to take out of the hitout.

“Our pressure was pretty good and all our stats and indicators showed we were there about,” he said.

“Some poor decisions and blokes probably lacking a bit of touch and execution going forward I think was probably the difference in the end.

“We’re coming from a fair way back as far as where we finished last year.

“A third of our side is new, so it’s going to take some time to jell and adapt to each other.

“That’s the positive, that

we pushed arguably one of the top teams in the competition right until the end.”

Former Sydney Swan Matthew O’Dwyer showcased his polish in the defeat, while Erskine and Dale Carson are going to provide headaches for most defences this year.

“That’s a bit of a work in progress as well with the two boys there, but as we said in the rooms, I’d be surprised if we come up against better defences than that,” the Anglesea coach said.

“They had two really good key backs who held their own and that allowed ‘Lovey’ (Daniel Lovick) and a couple of guys play their role too.

“It’s only a matter of time before that forward twopronged (attack) will get better and better the more game time they get.”
