MORE than 25 children aged between three and 18 years old will be vying for the title of Geelong’s best kid busker as the inaugural competition kicks off today.

Singers, musicians and breakdancers will compete in heats held on April 3, 7 and 10 between 10am and 2pm at the Little Malop St entrance of Market Square.

Organiser Steve Thew said the competition will give undiscovered talent a platform to succeed.

“It provides a platform for younger people to perform in front of a live audience and get them into the music scene,” Mr Thew said.

“I can’t believe some of the age of these kids who will be performing. They’ve got a lot of talent.”

Mr Thew said a similar competition for adults had brought significant success for competitors.

“I’ve had about 120 people through the Geelong’s best busker (competition) over the past years and some have gone onto (performing in) proper gigs and record CDs of their own.”

Six finalists will make it through to the competition’s final on April 14 outside Market Square.

The winner will win $500 and a guest performance on Pulse radio, 2nd will win $200 and 3rd will get $100.

The competition is part of the wider series of School Holiday events called Storyfest. The 13-day festival will celebrate storytelling in all forms including author readings and signings, indigenous storytelling, multimedia workshops and book swaps.
