AN international tourist has sustained serious head injuries after stepping into traffic while taking a photograph at Freshwater Creek.

Emergency services were called to Mount Duneed Rd, west of Anglesea Rd, after reports of a high-speed collision, about 2pm yesterday.

Police also nabbed 21 drink and drug-drivers in a disappointing holiday weekend.

Geelong Highway Patrol Sergeant Peter Radford said yesterday’s pedestrian collision was an example of why police urged people to take care on the region’s roads.

“The international visitor, from Singapore, was on the side of the road taking pictures of the country side and some sheep,” Sgt Radford said.

“We’ve got a local gentleman, a 29-year-old from Connewarre travelling west in a silver ute and two others travelling east when the international tourist has stepped into the middle of the road to take a photograph.

“The gentleman couldn’t do anything to avoid her.”

Distressed witnesses were comforted by police as paramedics worked to save the woman’s life.

The victim’s travelling partner was interviewed alongside her vehicle before driving back to Melbourne.

The injured woman was flown to The Alfred hospital in an induced coma with serious head injuries.

Geelong Highway Patrol Sergeant Jason Van Doren said Operation Nexus netted law breakers of all ages despite notice police would be out in force over the holiday period.

“While we’re pretty happy with the behaviour of most, some did decide to flout the law. You’d have to be living under a rock, though, not to know that we had every available police car out on our roads,” Sgt Van Doren said.

“Of most concern was the large number of drunk drivers we detected, which is a worrying trend upwards again.

“We had 15 drink-drivers detected and they were of all ages.”

Sgt Van Doren said those caught during the region’s Easter long weekend road blitz, Operation Nexus, included: AN UNLICENSED, unregistered 40-year-old man from Melton South caught at 7am on Easter Sunday travelling 125km/h on Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Rd west of Lara. A SUSPENDED, drink-driver caught travelling 119km/h on the Princes Hwy at Larpent before recording a PBT of .064 at 11.55pm Sunday. AN AUDI driver allegedly detected driving 122km/h down Moorabool St A BELMONT man caught travelling 91km/h on Mt Pleasant Rd with a BA reading of .162.
