Magpies injury woes grow

- JASON PHELAN

COLLINGWOOD’S Darcy Moore will be sidelined for up to a month after injuring his hamstring in the Magpies’ loss to Greater Western Sydney.

Pies football chief Geoff Walsh also said Kayle Kirby had been discharged from hospital after a heart scare.

Moore did not reappear after halftime at the MCG on Saturday with what was initially hoped was tightness.

But scans confirmed a tear expected to keep him out for between three and four weeks.

“Darcy probably has a typical, traditional hamstring (injury),” Walsh said yesterday.

“That’s not good news . . . it’s not a super bad one but bad enough. It’s a bit of a vicious cycle. He’s up and going, we get him playing and he came back quite quickly in terms of finding touch.”

Moore was slowed by achilles soreness late in his preseason preparation.

Kirby collapsed behind play in a VFL practice match played at the club’s Olympic Park headquarters on Saturday.

He was taken to Epworth Hospital, where he stayed for testing and observation for two nights.

The 19-year-old will not return to training until doctors get to the bottom of the issue.

“The investigations showed it was an irregular heartbeat but pleasingly that went back into rhythm of its own accord,” Walsh said.

“Obviously we’ll now have to investigate if it’s something that’s been there for a while and how do we treat it.”

On a bad day for the club, Tim Broomhead broke the tibia and fibula in his left leg in a sickening collision with a goalpost in the first quarter of the 16-point loss to the Giants.

Broomhead had surgery on Sunday and faces up to a year on the sidelines. In better news, Daniel Wells (calf) and Jordan De Goey (hamstring) are set to play in the VFL this weekend.

Ben Reid has recovered from his hip injury and will return for Friday night’s clash against Carlton, along with Mason Cox, who has served a suspension.

Richmond’s Josh Caddy will miss the defending premier’s clash with Hawthorn after accepting a one-match ban.

Caddy had been charged with striking Adelaide’s David Mackay in the Crows’ grand final rematch win at Adelaide Oval on Thursday night.

The forward tried to spoil Mackay’s marking attempt but made contact with a swinging arm to the head. Mackay left the field with concussion and did not return.

Gold Coast youngster Jack Bowes is also facing a onegame suspension after being charged with engaging in rough conduct against Carlton’s Jacob Weitering in Saturday’s clash at Etihad Stadium.

Weitering was fighting for position in a marking contest with a Suns defender when Bowes left his feet and laid a high, front-on bump on him.

The incident was assessed as careless conduct with medium impact to the head. Bowes has until 11am today to notify the AFL if he intends to take his case to the tribunal.

Tigers ruckman Toby Nankervis and Adelaide’s Darcy Fogarty face fines for on-field misdemeanours, as do Greater Western Sydney’s Phil Davis and Rory Lobb, Collingwood’s Lynden Dunn, Melbourne’s Jordan Lewis, Brisbane Lions pair Dayne Zorko and Nick Robertson and West Coast’s Jamie Cripps.
