OUR SPORTS COUP: City to host more A-League games, coast secures Vic Open until 2022

- CHAD VAN ESTROP

TOP-FLIGHT Australian soccer and world-class golf will continue to be played in Geelong after the State Government revealed it had struck in-principle agreements with major sporting bodies.

Sports Minister John Eren last night announced Melbourne Victory would extend its partnership with Geelong and play one game a season in the city until 2021.

The region’s standing as a sporting mecca will also be enhanced with the Victorian Open golf tournament locked in at 13th Beach Golf Links until 2022.

Mr Eren said the sporting blockbusters would inspire kids, attract visitors and create a buzz around town.

“The flow-on effects from these types of events are huge — they create local jobs, pump money into our businesses and cement Victoria as the sporting capital of the country,” he said.

“When it comes to hosting the big-ticket games, Geelong has runs on the board. We couldn’t be prouder to lock in these games and continue that momentum.”

It is understood the finer details of the agreement between Melbourne Victory and the Kardinia Park Stadium Trust are yet to be finalised.

Mr Eren said the status of the Vic Open will also rise with the men’s and women’s competitions to receive international ranking, and surpass the NSW Open to become the number one state open in both prize money and world ranking points.

Meanwhile, Etihad Stadium and the surrounding precinct will get a $225 million makeover in a landmark deal that also locks the AFL Grand Final in Melbourne for 40 years.

The agreement between the AFL and the Andrews Government will allow the Melbourne Cricket Club Trust to complete a major redevelopment of the MCG — potentially increasing its capacity.

Etihad’s refurbishment will focus on improving viewing experiences for fans, and include better bottom-level seating for footy and other major events.

It is understood footy clubs hosting games at Etihad will get “fairer” deals, with more money to be released from all matches as part of the deal.

Premier Daniel Andrews said the deal was designed with supporters in mind.

“This is for the fans, giving them the best venues, better access to the sports they love, and keeping the Grand Final where it belongs — at the MCG — for the next 40 years.”

“This landmark deal will bring more footy to the regions, boost AFLW facilities and make sure Victoria stays the sporting capital of Australia.”

The upgrades are part of a larger sport cash splash set to be included in the May State Budget.
