Title shot could put Webb into seventh fight heaven

- ALEX OATES

KYLE Webb will gun for his first boxing title when he fights at Melbourne Pavilion tonight.

The former Muay Thai champion will fight Nathan MacLean for the vacant state cruiserweight title in Team Ellis promotion’s Once Upon A Time.

Webb will join friends and training partners Cain Brun- ton, Clint Alderton BrandonLee Rocco and Jack Light on the stacked card.

MacLean boasts three fights — one win and two losses — and brings an attacking style.

“He’s a tough guy,” Webb said. “I know he’s strong. He just keeps coming forward the whole fight.

“I’ve got a good game plan and I’ve had a good training camp. It should be a good fight.”

Webb said he had trained strongly since he defeated Queenslander Steve Roberts with a body-shot KO in the first round last December.

“It was over pretty quickly, but I had another good training camp,” he said.

Holding the east coast Australian Muay Thai title, he said his form since switching to boxing opened the door for his first title fight.

“I changed to boxing about two years ago and I’ve had six fights for four wins and two draws, and those wins were by KO,” Webb said.

He will have Australian champion Sam Soliman and local trainer Tony Salta in his corner, having trained with both in recent months.

“I’ve always been close with Tony Salta, but one of my best friends is Sam Soliman, so I spend time with both,” he said.

“Sam’s been a massive influ- ence. He was one of the reasons I switched to boxing.”

Webb said he was excited to help lead the Geelong charge at Melbourne Pavilion.

“That’s the best thing about it, fighting with my mates,” he said. “And we’re doing a show in Geelong in June.”

Rocco takes on Jyl Wright, Brunton meets Timmy Tse and Alderton fights Jonathan Binet. Doors open at 6.30pm. Tickets on sale at the door.
