Ammos start to click after big win over Torquay

- ALEX OATES

GEELONG Amateur cocoach Jarrod Young believes his side is nearing its best after a crucial win away from home.

Ammos delivered close to a four-quarter performance at Spring Creek Reserve, running away from Torquay after halftime to post a 31-point win.

“It was a really good, even contribution and that’s what we asked the boys to provide us, because the first two weeks were a little bit patchy,” Young said last night.

“We defended really strongly and that was a big focus for us this week.

“We’re pretty happy, but it’s only Round 3 and there’s a lot to work on.

“I think when we look back at the end of the year, a win over Torquay is always tough to get and we’re pretty happy.”

With a point separating the sides at halftime, Ammos put the foot down with a five-goalto-nil third term.

“It was really good to come out after halftime and play strongly and put a score on the board,” Young said.

“Our intensity and pressure around the footy picked up after halftime. We were able to defend really strongly and put the score on the board. It was a really good quarter.”

Mitch Day had a night out with four majors, while Baden Dodd and Chris Kangars were also impressive.

“They were our three standouts, but to be honest, we didn’t have a passenger,” Young said.

Ammos moved to fourth on the ladder, while Torquay slipped to seventh with a second-straight defeat.

“To improve the ledger to 2-1, rather than 1-2, is a good start after three games,” he said.

“The Bellarine is a lot stronger as a whole and every game is really crucial.

“It’s not a three or fourteam competition and these wins early are going to pay off later in the year.”

NEWCOMB UPSETS DRYSDALE TRAILING at quarter-time, Newcomb pulled off the biggest upset of the season — in any AFL Barwon senior competition — to topple Drysdale at Grinter Reserve.

Kicking six-goals-to-two in the second quarter, the Power turned a four-point deficit into a 20-point lead to provide much-needed belief going into the main break.

With its last win almost 10 matches ago, Newcomb stretched its lead to 28 points at the final change and the locals sensed an upset.

And with plenty at stake, the Power delivered, kicking another two goals and holding the hapless Hawks to one to get home by 36 points.

ANGLESEA HAS MODDA’S MEASURE MODEWARRE suffered its second loss of the season, going down to Anglesea by 23 points.

The ’Seas set up the victory

with a five-goal-to-one third term to grab third place on the ladder.

Dale Carson (four) and Jordan Erskine (two) caused too many headaches for the Warriors’ defence, while Ryan Dahlhaus was brilliant.

Luke Forbes jagged two goals for Modewarre, while Morgan Fenton tried all day.

COUTAS TOO GOOD FOR PORTARLINGTON QUEENSCLIFF continued its transformation, collecting a second victory on the trot.

But it was not without tense moments, with Portarlington storming home in the final term.

Trailing by 47 points at the final change, the Demons held the Coutas goalless and slotted five majors to fall 15 points shy.
