Giants cut down to size after good start

- ALEX TIGANI

FOR the fifth time in 10 months Geelong West surrendered a lead over a fellow finals contender.

It is five times too many for third-year senior coach Andrew Clark, who will address his group before the seventh v ninth clash against North Geelong this weekend.

“I just thought with the lead we had a few blokes went into their shells a bit and opted for an easy option rather than put their head over the footy,” Clark said.

“Some blokes were happy to just get a handball on the outside and not put their head over the footy, so we addressed that with the boys after the game.

“As a coaching panel, we take some responsibility and the players themselves admitted we didn’t change much in the final 30 minutes, so we’re going to address that this week.”

There were some highlights, with Michael Leamer finding plenty of footy in the second term while Paddy Dwyer again proved to be one of the league’s best small defenders with 17 disposals.

“I’d like to have Michael Leamer in about two or three spots, but preferably I’d want him on the ball; it just depends on his match-up really,” Clark said.

First-year Geelong West Giant Scott Galloway will have scans this afternoon after spraining his ankle in the third quarter.
