Vixen’s comeback

Following serious concussion, Mannix returns

- RYAN REYNOLDS

MELBOURNE Vixens star Emily Mannix says she sees the light at the end of the tunnel after finally overcoming a serious concussion and returning to the netball court.

The Geelong netballer featured in the Vixens’ thrilling 49-49 pre-season draw with Sydney Swifts at The Arena on Saturday night.

It was Mannix’s first competitive hit out since an elbow to the head in a pre-season friendly in February against the Queensland Firebirds.

“It was good to get out there and work on the little things. It’s hard coming back after having that break,” Mannix said.

“It was good to get out there to play with the girls and push to get that match fitness back.

“What’s happened has happened and I’m just focused on getting back, getting the confidence back and just playing with no fear.”

So severe were the effects of Mannix’s concussion she was forced to withdraw from training at an Australian pre-Commonwealth Games training camp, and the defender admits she hit a few low points during her journey back.

“It was a bit of a crappy time for me,” Mannix said.

“I had three weeks or so where I could only go for a slow walk. I struggled with all the symptoms that come with concussion.

“There was a lot of sadness and a lot of weird things (that I was experiencing). Concussion varies for everyone.”

Mannix featured in three of the four quarters of last night’s match, which saw Swifts star Sophie Garbin level scores on the siren in front of a sold-out local crowd.

“It was a good hit out and that’s what we need heading into the season,” Mannix said.

“They’re a tough team and will be up there this year.”
