Giants’ stellar start continues with narrow win

GEELONG West has kept its undefeated start to 2018 going with a narrow win over Bannockburn.

The Giants had to hold their nerve, running out 26-23 winners in testing conditions at Victoria Park.

Led in the midcourt by Brooke Zwart, Geelong West was able to create plenty of turn overs and get the ball moving into the attacking end.

Goalkeeper Stacey Smith was a strong presence in the defensive circle, combining well with Daria Beck.

And Elly Earl and Lisa Monaghan both had an impact on the result, going into the midcourt from the bench.

Tigers coach Leigh Potter said she wasn’t concerned by her side’s winless start to the year with the Tigers needing extra time to gel as a team.

Tegan McNamara moved into the defensive end and found strong combinations with Potter, while Tigers Abbie Avery and Georgia Duncan held their own through the centre court linking defence to attack.

IN other results, Werribee enjoyed a 16-goal win over Inverleigh.

Defensive pressure in all positions of the court allowed for greater turn over and scoreboard pressure for Centrals.

The weather conditions proved to be too much for the young Inverleigh attacking end in combination with the tall defensive pressure from Werribee proving too strong.

Brigitte Ardossi, Meg Noonan and Amanda Wilson were best on court for Centrals, while Elise Lever, Teagan Madden, Bentia Eygenraam led the way for the Hawks

CORIO put in a performance full of discipline and poise as it marched its way to a 13- goal win over North Geelong.

The Devils worked hard in defence to create ball turnover, with Holly Milsome and Liv Krygger creating pressure through the midcourt. Katrina Biscans was dominant in the defensive circle for the Devils in the 30-17 win.

For the Magpies, Taylah Maar in her first game in Agrade held her own, but North struggled to cope with a number of key outs heading into the game.

SHANNON Pietsch adapted to the windy and wet conditions and was excellent in attack shooting 32 goals as East Geelong recorded a 17- goal win over Belmont Lions in testing conditions.

THOMSON had little trouble getting past Bell Post Hill, recording a 64-19 win at home

Thomson got off to a flying start, shooting 14 goals to 5 in the first quarter in wet and windy conditions and never looked back.

But the game ended on a sour note with key Tigers Shannyn Leach and Imogen Bennett getting injured in the final quarter, leaving Thomson with no bench.

ANAKIE picked up its first points of 2018 with a eight-goal win over Winchelsea. —
