DANGER’S TV DEAL

CATS MANIA!

- PETER ROLFE

GEELONG star Patrick Dangerfield has hooked his own TV fishing show.

The Brownlow Medallist will go from midfield maestro to star of the small screen in a Channel Seven series to debut this weekend.

It can be revealed Dangerfield will realise a childhood dream when The Last Cast airs on Sunday, documenting a 600km fishing trip of a lifetime circumnavigating Groote Eylandt. He said the adventure — which involved a crew of seven loading two tiny boats with all the food, water and fuel they needed for two weeks exploring some of Australia’s most pristine water — was “gung ho’’.

“It is the hardest thing I’ve ever done by a mile,’’ he said.

“It looks fantastic on screen but what it doesn’t show is just how hard it is to capture it all and put it all together. Fishing was the thing that took the least time.’’

Dangerfield said the four-part fishing special had whet his appetite for more on-screen adventures.

“But maybe once footy has finished,’’ he said.

The Cats star said footy’s most famous angler, Rex Hunt, was an inspiration.

“I grew up idolising Rex Hunt,’’ he said. “Everything about Rex I loved.

“He was a showman, exciting, he would take everyone along for the ride.

“What I didn’t realise is just how hard it is to produce anything on the water, so it’s been a learning experience.’’

He said the show, to air at 11.30am on Seven, added another dimension to his busy life.

“It is busy balancing footy, family and then life outside of footy and then trying to mix in a bit of fun,’’ he said. “But fishing is what I love

doing.’’
