Coker cool on election tax cuts
LABOR’S federal candidate for Corangamite has backed her party’s intent to rule out generous company tax cuts being spruiked by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
Candidate Libby Coker — who is also a Surf Coast Shire councillor — scolded the Liberal Party for its proposal to cut taxes to businesses in next month’s Budget.
“Budgets are about priorities,” Ms Coker said. “Labor’s priority will always be working Australians, and the Liberals will always look after big business and millionaires.”
“Under Malcolm Turnbull, millionaires get a tax cut of $16,400, while someone earning $60,000 gets a tax hike of $300.
“Turnbull’s prioritising the top end of town with $65 billion tax handout, meanwhile he’s cutting Medicare, cutting local schools and hospitals, and cutting pensions.”
Yesterday morning Ms Coker tweeted there was “nothing more indicative of a failure of leadership than @TurnbullMalcolm handing out tax cuts that can’t be afforded”.
The Government is attempting to legislate for a cut to the company tax rate for businesses with an annual turnover of more than $50 million.
Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has already said his party would scrap the bigbusiness cuts if the Liberals manage to get the policy through.
But Mr Shorten has not said if he will repeal a tax cut legislated for companies with turnovers of less than $50 million.
