DOOR OPENS FOR CAREER AT PORT
WHEN staff at the GeelongPort had meetings with its chief executive Brett Winter over the past 18 months, there was one gleaming suggestion that really struck a chord with the newly-appointed CEO.
The return of an apprenticeships program.
Eighteen-year-olds Tylah Lee and Aidan Barrow began apprenticeships at the port in February as part of the GeelongPort Apprenticeship Program, which was created earlier this year after Mr Winter acknowledged the staff’s desire to pass on skills and knowledge of the industry to the next generation.
“We’ve got people who have been working in the port for a long time,” Mr Winter said.
“They have a genuine connection with the fabric of GeelongPort and want to make sure the handover of skills and experience continues.”
Aidan, a fitter and turner apprentice, and Tylah, an electrical apprentice, are now part of that next generation.
GeelongPort has partnered with Gforce Employment Solutions to source quality candidates for the new apprenticeships program, and hopes to introduce another four to its workforce by the end of the year.
