Alderton seething after draw

- ALEX OATES

GEELONG boxer Clint Alderton has demanded a rematch with Jonathan Binet after being dealt a controversial draw.

Alderton revealed plans were already in the works to fight Binet at Tony Salta’s Old School Boxing Promotions in June following a shock decision at Melbourne Pavilion on Friday night.

“I won the fight . . . everybody in the joint thought I won the fight,” a seething Alderton said.

“Even my opponent’s trainer said ‘ you won that fight’, so I don’t know what the go was.

“Apparently apprentice judges were meant to shadow official judges, but they ended up judging the first 10 fights.”

Alderton and Binet could not be separated after four rounds in the Team Ellis Promotions light heavyweight event, with the judges scoring the bout 38-38.

But Alderton had no doubt in his mind that he had won. “Clearly I won,” he said. “I don’t even think he hit me, to be honest. I was very disappointed, but there’s nothing you can do. You can’t let it hold you back. You just have to push ahead to the next one.”

Alderton’s team requested a rematch with Binet on the night, but is yet to receive an official response.

Should Binet accept the bout, he will fight Alderton for the WBF title over 10 rounds.

It was a relatively successful night for Geelong, with Kyle Webb, Cain Brunton and Jack Light securing victories, while Brandon-Lee Rocco went down to Jyl Wright.

“Cain Brunton did his job perfectly, he executed a plan and won the fight easily,” Alderton said.

“Jack did really well. He won in the first round.”

Brunton defeated Tim Tse, while Light overcame Beven Henry.
