Roos jumping after upset delivers belief for team

- LACHIE YOUNG BFL

NEW Anglesea coach Rhonda Gugger says the evenness of the BFL netball season means early season results should not come as a shock to followers of the competition.

The Roos caused an upset last week when knocking over reigning premier Modewarre 32-30, and despite the Warriors being without several key players, the scoreline will give Gugger’s side hope they can knock off the undefeated Torquay on Saturday.

“It seems a pretty open sea- son at the moment,” she said.

“Everyone is beating others but only by a couple of goals from what I’ve seen. I think it’s about playing our own game but being aware of the opposition and their capabilities.

“You can’t take them lightly, but we should play our game plan and we will be motivated from the weekend.

“We have to concentrate on our game plan, which is about possession, and our philosophy is just to give it your all.”

Anglesea sits fourth on the table, but its percentage of 85 is ranked eighth of the 10 teams.

Torquay, which defeated Modewarre in Round 1 and is coming off a thrilling one-goal win over fierce rival Geelong Amateur, is second and will start as a firm favourite.

Gugger, who has joined the club from Swan Hill, has no doubt the Roos players are still finding their feet but said the win over Modewarre — a week after a strong showing against Drysdale — would do wonders.

“It was sensational and we were very excited,” she said.

“It was very exciting and we now have that belief, so we can build on that with some of our combinations coming together.

“I just think we have 11 new players in our squad, so it is going to take a little bit of time to jell together, but they’re quite athletic and fit.

“It will take a little time, but the win over Drysdale was good for us to set up the season, and the win in B-grade really motivated the A-grade team (that week).”
