Galaxy can’t afford to be complacent
GEELONG Galaxy coach Kat Smith says her team will not be taking the Senior National Training Centre side lightly today as they look to claim a third straight NPLW win.
The Galaxy have advanced to sixth on the NPLW table after a run of good form but the NTC sits ninth with just one win and a goal difference of -26 from seven matches.
But Smith said there was always an unknown about playing against young talent, which made this afternoon’s clash both a challenging and exciting one.
“For me it’s always good to see the young talent that has been identified across Victoria in the NTC program,” Smith said.
“I think they’re a very young squad but they’ve certainly held their own against their more senior and experienced counterparts.
“So it makes for an interesting match. What I love about young players is their unpredictability and they have no fear, which makes it exciting.”
Galaxy started their winning trot a fortnight ago with a convincing 4-1 victory over South Melbourne and consolidated last week with a 11-0 thumping of Southern United.
Smith said while the wins were reward for effort, the scoreline was secondary to the manner in which they were finding the back of the net.
“From a Galaxy perspective with a really good result against South Melbourne and then backing it up with our performance against Southern, being able to put the ball in the back of the net, which if anyone who has followed our story this year would know has been an issue, hopefully we can continue that,” she said.
“The buzz word is momentum but more importantly we just want those three points.
“That win against South gave us confidence and belief in how we are playing and the way we are scoring goals is probably more important than just looking at the number on a scoreboard.
“11-0 looks good from our side of things, but sometimes when you come up against those teams you find it difficult to score goals the way we did.”
Geelong Galaxy hosts Senior NTC at Banyul Warri Reserve, with kickoff at 3pm today.
