Latham backs MP
FORMER Opposition Leader Mark Latham says Corio MP Richard Marles has what it takes to lead the federal Labor Party. Mr Latham, who led the ALP between 2003 and 2005 but has since been estranged from the party, said Mr Marles remained a centrist voice despite the party drifting to the Left over the past decade. “Marles’s work on immigration as a shadow minister was commendable, he understood the need for the boat turnback policy and advocated it strongly,” Mr Latham said.
“That was despite the Left of the party attacking him time again over what is sensible, mainstream immigration policy. Most Australians don’t want a return to the Rudd-Gillard policy of 1200 men, women and children drowning at sea.
“That was real leadership from Marles.”
Mr Latham worked with the Corio MP’s predecessor, Gavan O’Connor, during his time as Labor leader although he knew the Victorian MP through his work as a highranking union official.
“Gavan was a great local member — he loved and still loves Geelong, I’m sure. He was a pleasure to work with,” the politicianturnedbroadcaster said.
Mr Latham made the comments while promoting his new book cowritten with Sydney broadcaster Alan Jones — Conversations in the Kitchen.
“It came about when Alan and I were presenting our usual program (on Sky). We talked a bit about cooking and went through a few recipes and the feedback was extraordinary,” he said.
“After I left parliament, more than 12 years ago now, I got more involved in cooking with the kids. What I’d like to see come of this book is more dads in the kitchen, teaching their kids about healthy eating. It can really bring families together.”
