COLAC Imperials coach Tim Hassett hailed intensity and team effort after his club notched its first win of the season yesterday against Lara at Bisinella Oval.

The Imperials controlled much of the game and kept the Cats goalless after halftime in the 9.18 (72) to 3.3 (21) win, thanks to a four-goal haul from returning forward Tegan Barber.

“It’s good to get a win and give the girls a bit of a reward for their efforts over the past month,” Hassett said postmatch.

“The message was to be competitive and stick to what we’ve been doing, we’ve been playing really good opposition and haven’t had the reward yet, so it’s great.”

He praised his players for their teamwork and use of the ball to create multiple scoring opportunities.

“The most pleasing part was that everybody was able to contribute in some way shape or form, especially when we have girls who were playing their first game of footy today,” he said.

VFL-listed player Georgia Watson, Tegan Barber and Ruby Manson were among the standouts for Colac.

Lara coach Tania Thorpe admitted the Cats still had some work to do, but could not fault her team’s endeavour.

“We’ve got a fair bit to work on still, we congest the ball a lot, if we can learn where each player needs to go and not all go to the ball, we’ll be a lot better off,” she said.

“They have a go every week, most of them have no background of football, they’ve come from other sports and are still learning their skills, but in saying that they always put in 100 per cent,” she added.

Lauren Heyward stood tall in the ruck, while Ebony Teesdale played a vital shutdown role and was also among the best players.

A STRONG second half powered St Mary’s to a 34point win over Geelong West.

Full forward Jady Brkic and Ashleigh Bond again led the way on the scoreboard, kicking two majors each in the 6.12 (48) to 2.2 (14) win, while Breanna Beckley was again among the best players.

WATERTIGHT defence was key in Barwon Heads’ 24point win over Bell Post Hill, holding the Panthers goalless.

Erinlee Huggard and Perri Jones led the way for the home side at Howard Harmer Oval.

ST JOSEPH’S held off Grovedale at the weekend, grinding to a 12-point victory.

The Tigers recovered after Joeys got the jump early, fighting back from a goalless opening quarter to match it with their opposition for the final three quarters.

St Joseph’s won 6.4 (40) to 4.4 (28).

Evelyn Dhamarrandji booted two goals for St Joseph’s and was named best on ground, while Stephanie Guy was the leading goalkicker with three.

Midfielder Demi Grant again proved a handful for the opposition.

GEELONG Amateur is gaining more momentum after recording another big win, this time against Ocean Grove 11.5 (71) to 1.2 (8).

Lauren Marino played a stunning role for Ammos, kicking four goals in a best-onground performance, while Carly Post, Stephanie Abfalter and Amanda Borgia kicked two each.

NORTH Geelong was unfazed in its 10-goal thumping of the Hawks, thanks to a big third quarter that put the game away.

The Hawks were held to just one goal (Melissa Egan).
