Tour winner’s tips for juniors

-

EUROPEAN Tour winner Richard Green gave some of Geelong’s juniors a lesson of a lifetime at Geelong Golf Club on Saturday.

The 47-year-old headlined an exhibition at the club with the Victorian Open champion spending an hour on the range with kids who are part of Geelong’s junior golf program before hitting the course.

Geelong golf club’s Paul Christie said Green’s visit had left a lasting impression.

“My son is part of the program and that’s all I’ve heard about. ‘Richard this, Richard that’,” Christie said.

“It was a big thrill for them to have someone of his calibre. He’s played with the likes of Tiger (Woods), played in The Masters.”

Green gave the budding golfers an understanding of how international quality players warm up.

“They went through a normal routine that he would (do before playing) on the range for an hour,” Christie said.

He then played nine holes with the kids watching.

“It gave the kids a bit more of an insight as well. A chance to see what he was thinking on the course, what shots he was AP trying to play,” Christie said.

“They obviously got to see some fantastic golf.

“Richard had one of the kids caddie for him on each hole. It had the sense of being at a tournament.”

For the record, Green finished under-par through the nine holes.

Geelong runs three junior golf programs from beginner to advanced, which are run by Green’s coach Darrell Brown.

Green, who lives at Thirteenth Beach, regularly practices at Geelong Golf Club when he is not playing in tournaments.
