Luck of a draw for Cats

- DAMIEN RACTLIFFE VFLW COLLINGWOOD 0.2 0.8 1.9 3.9 (27) GEELONG 0.2 2.2 3.2 4.3 (27) GOALS: Collingwood: Geelong: BEST: Collingwood: Geelong:

GEELONG VFL Women’s coach Paul Hood said his side was lucky to escape with a draw against Collingwood at Olympic Park yesterday.

While windy conditions plagued the Round 2 match, Hood said it was the Magpies’ pressure around the football that denied his side the opportunity to play the way it wanted to.

The Cats broke out to an 11-point lead early in the last quarter when Alisha Habib converted, but back to back goals saw the Pies hit the front, only for Geelong to tie the scores with a behind.

“It was level at quartertime, it was five points at three-quarter time and it was a really tight tussle all day,” Hood said.

“We were quite fortunate that Collingwood missed quite a few girls.

“We’re fortunate to get a draw, with the opposition having quite a number more scoring shots than us. But by the same token, you just think if we capitalised on one more of our opportunities going forward, we could have kicked an extra goal or point to win the game.”

Hayley Trevean will get scans on her thumb, with Hood hoping for a dislocation or bad sprain and not a break, while the Cats will also have to wait and see how Hannah Mangan pulls up after copping a heavy knock to her AC joint.

“We’ve got a lot of new players in the team so we’re just getting used to the level we need to play at,” Hood said following his side’s one win and one draw from two rounds. We weren’t too bad, we weren’t too good – probably a draw was a fitting result, I suppose.”
