Warriors set winning pace early
SPORTING enthusiasts refer to the third term as the premiership quarter, but for reigning premiers Modewarre the first quarter proved most crucial in its 12-goal win against Geelong Amateur.
The Warriors made an early statement, setting up their 46-34 win with a stunning 20-6 opening term on Saturday.
“The girls were ready to go and knew what role they had to play,” Modewarre coach Matt Armstrong said.
“We started really strong and had a fantastic first quarter, but after we flew out of the blocks it was neck and neck for the rest of the game.”
Ammos’ assistant coach, Breda O’Kane, was impressed with her side’s ability to hold its nerve after a disappointing start.
“We let things blow out a bit in the first quarter, but we refocused well after quarter-time and, credit to them (Modda), they came out firing,” she said.
Ammos showed their versatility after making position changes at quarter time, which saw goaler Katrina Sproal play a defensive role, and B-grade shooter Cynthia Giuffrida enter the goal circle.
“The defence end worked tirelessly the whole game,” O’Kane said. “We need to go away and work on a few things, but the bye will be a good chance to refocus.”
Warriors wing defence Lauren Lapsley “made life difficult” for her opposition with her superior game reading, while goal shooter Alex Smith stepped up to her task in the ring with ease.
Armstrong said the win was important, considering how tight the BFL competition had become this season.
“It could come down to percentage when it comes to the top five teams in the competition,” he said. “It’s been getting tighter and tighter each year because everyone has recruited so well.”
