Injury a blow for Galaxy

- RYAN REYNOLDS WNPL

GALAXY United star Coby McInerney will be sweating on the results of scans after suffering a knee injury in the 3-0 win over Alamein yesterday.

McInerney, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in February last year, had only just returned to full fitness.

It left a sour taste in the mouth of coach Kat Smith, who watched her team put in a strong performance.

“We are obviously fearing the worst but hoping for the best,” Smith said of the hurt player.

“The fear is that it’s the same knee. She will have some scans, it’s put a real dampener on what should have been a really nice gift for all the mums out there.”

Matilda Laura Alleway, fresh from an Indonesian surfing holiday, scored from a corner either side of halftime to give Galaxy a 2-0 lead.

The exciting Lulu AlHuneidi then sealed the three points, scoring the team’s third in the 86th minute with her weapon of a left foot.

“To get three points and a clean sheet . . . it’s the only measure you have in football that’s quite objective,” Smith said.

“To turn around a performance where we conceded four goals last week was quite pleasing.”

Galaxy also handed import Jennie Sroba a debut off the bench with the American only recently arriving in Australia.

The defender played her soccer at James Madison University, featuring in the first team 76 times before finishing in 2016.

“She got 20, 25 minutes in today which was good,” Smith said of the import.

“It gives us a bit more (flexibility with) selection across the back and she’s an attackingminded player as well.

“It’s great that she’s out here now. It’s a gamble you take, you’re going by video footage which is only going to portray their best traits.

“It’s up to us to do our due diligence.”
