Frustration as Lady Supercats try to get in synch
GEELONG Lady Supercats coach David Herbert says he is struggling to find answers and solutions for his team’s recent poor form after two considerable defeats during their weekend double-header.
The Supercats conceded a 17-point run to the Sandringham Sabres to go down 65-79 in Saturday’s match, while yesterday they were unable to contain the scoring proficiency of the Nunawading Spectres, losing 54-73.
Herbert lamented the pos- ition his side finds itself in after struggling to gel since the arrivals of imports Chelsea Poppens and Daniela Wallen.
“We’ve added some new players and we just can’t synch with each other right now,” Herbert said.
“We have to work them into what we’re doing and it’s not working right now ... we need to try and get them involved a bit more.
“Obviously Chelsea (Poppens) is a major piece of the puzzle that we need. She’s a post player that we haven’t had, but we just don’t seem to gel right now.
“It’s frustrating from the sidelines but I take it on my shoulders. We’re not playing the way we should be and I need to find the solutions very quickly.”
Isa Brancatisano’s performance against Sandringham was a shining light, scoring 23 points, including an efficient seven from 10 from beyond the three-point line.
But elsewhere, and not for the first time this season, it was the shooting that let the Supercats down, both from beyond the arc and close to the rim, going at 37 per cent and 31 per cent across the two matches.
Herbert put the shooting inconsistencies down to mindset and inexperience.
“At times we shot the ball too much from the three-point line, other times we didn’t shoot enough,” he said.
“It’s possibly how we prepare mentally, it just doesn’t feel quite right yet. We may look at how we structure our offence because we’re just passing the ball around, not being aggressive, so we might need to tweak our offence a bit.
“I’ve got to remember these girls are pretty young as well. It’s just a hard balance right now, but we’ve got to find the right balance to take the next step forward and get our season back on track.”
