‘Kind’, but no bail

- RUSTY WOODGER

A WOMAN accused of stealing a car from Waterworld on Monday claims she fell on the wrong side of the law because she was too “kind-hearted”.

Samantha Spiteri, of no fixed address, appeared in Geelong Magistrates’ Court yesterday facing charges including car theft and drug possession.

Police allege Ms Spiteri, 37, stole the car from the Waterworld carpark in Norlane.

Prosecutor Senior Constable Geoff Lamb said the owner used the Find My iPhone feature to trace the car to Belmont, where police allegedly found Ms Spiteri in the driver’s seat.

A search of the car allegedly uncovered make-up and a pair of jeans stolen from Kmart, along with a small quantity of ice and antique items believed to be the proceeds of crime.

The court heard Ms Spiteri was on bail and serving three community corrections orders.

Representing herself in a bail application, she said she should be released because she had “changed” in the hours since allegedly stealing the car.

“I’ve thought a lot about things and I’m being honest — I’ve changed,” she said. “I wasn’t thinking correctly.”

Ms Spiteri said she had been falling foul of the law due to prioritising the needs of others.

“I was just too kindhearted,” she said.

“Now I’m going to make sure I do everything for myself and not for everyone else.”

But Magistrate Michael Coghlan refused bail, saying she had failed to provide a compelling reason.

“I don’t have any real confidence . . . that you are not an unacceptable risk of committing further offences on bail,” Mr Coghlan said.

She was remanded to return to court next week.
