Magpie joins the Blues

- ALEX OATES

NEW playing-coach Mitch Troy says he is confident of returning Winchelsea to the BPCA finals as he embarks on a new chapter of his career.

A bowling allrounder who played in North Geelong’s GCA1 grand final last season, Troy joins the Blues after 15 years at Osborne Park.

He said it was tough to depart the Magpies, but was eager for a fresh start.

“I haven’t played hard wicket for a long time,” he said.

“The hardest part was leaving my home club. I’ve been at North Geelong for 15 years and it wasn’t a decision that I took lightly.

“My young fella runs around at North every minute of every day and my brother and family are all part of North Geelong, but I thought I’d better do this now while I’ve got a chance.”

Troy’s aim is to lift Winchelsea back into the finals as it enters only its second season in the BPCA.

“From speaking to people, clearly we need to get a bit more professional with the way they go about it,” he said.

“Against the good sides, you need to bring more professionalism in training and on game day. Hopefully, I can shake it up.

“I’ve got support from the committee to change a few things and making finals will be our No.1 priority.

“They lost five games under 15 runs last year and that says they’ve got a bit of an issue.”

Troy said Winchelsea had chased his services last season, with his boss, Marc Carson, at the club.

“That was one of the main factors,” Troy said.

“He gets in my ear every day in the ute and Tommy Stephenson is a mate.”
