Stingrays suffer 11th loss

- DAMIEN RACTLIFFE

CORIO BAY has been stung with its 11th defeat in 12 games this season, copping a 26-point loss to Hume City Broncos yesterday.

The visitors were effectively unstoppable in the first term as they helped themselves to 42 points, building a buffer that proved insurmountable.

Stingrays import Julius Brooks scored 21 points and collected 12 turnovers, but he was a lone standout for the losing side.

“It was a disappointing game for us, it was a tough day at the office,” captain Michael Rebula said.

“The first quarter, they just came out of the blocks and we weren’t expecting them to shoot 75 per cent from the three-point line — I think they shot 42 points — and we were just chasing all game.

“It was a 20-point margin after the first quarter and I think we ended up losing by a similar margin in the end, so the first quarter definitely hurt in terms of getting the win.”

Rebula said his side needed to continue to work on its defence, averaging more than 95 points against per game this season.

“We know we’ve got enough offensive power to win games, so for us it’s all about defence and having defensive pride,” he said.

“We’re constantly working on our defence, but in saying that, they were shooting them from really hand-in-the-face, at times really good, defence and still making them. That’s just basketball sometimes.”
