WARRIORS FIND FORM

- SOPHIE GRIFFITHS BFL NETBALL

REIGNING BFL premier Modewarre redeemed its early-season loss to Torquay with a strong 17-goal win on Saturday in the return bout.

The Warriors had a less-thanideal start to the season, going down to Torquay by three goals.

But on Saturday, they bounced back with conviction in a 55-37 win at Mount Moriac Reserve, headlined by hardworking performances from Alexandra Smith and Kathryn Vickers, and the ever-reliable accuracy of Kim Martin (38 from 42).

“All I asked was for a team effort,” coach Matt Armstrong said.

“We’ve had time to jell and cohesion always brings out our best performances”.

“We had all of our losses early on ... today showed the girls that they do have that ability to focus and just work hard for the entire hour. I’m really proud of them.”

Approaching the halfway point of the season, Modewarre sits at a comfortable 6-2. With an average win- ning margin of 28 goals, the numbers indicate that when Modda wins, they do so convincingly. Both losses, against Torquay and Anglesea, were decided by three and two goals respectively. Regular player rotations invigorated the Modda outfit, who played at full throttle the entire game.

“Girls coming on and off the bench regularly gave us the fresh legs to run out the game,” Armstrong said.

“On top of that, everyone played their role really well when they were on court.”

It is a testament to the evenness of the competition that any weekend could make or break the top five.

Entering Round 8, the Tigers were top of the table and Modda was second. Now, Modda sits on top the ladder and Torquay is fourth. The top four sides are separated only by percentage.

“It definitely gives us confidence, but it’s a long season and we’ve got a long way to go,” Armstrong said.

“The next time we play them — or any team — the scores are back to zero all. They (Torquay) will come back stronger than ever as all good sides do.”
