Supercats so close to top eight place

- WILL HOGAN SEABL WOMEN

THE Geelong Lady Supercats responded emphatically to their Friday night loss against Dandenong, accounting for Albury-Wodonga in an 86-64 victory.

It was a must-win for David Herbert’s side, who find themselves just one win shy of the top eight.

Herbert said the potential and chemistry of the team is there for his side to make a push for playoffs.

“You can just see there is a rapport and a sense of confidence within the group,” Herbert said. “They get along brilliantly off the floor, it’s just actually gelling on court. Now we have to fight to find our way back up the ladder — we aren’t far away. The potential of the team is just fantastic but it’s just finding when we can actually click and get going. I’m hopeful from here it’s a building block.”

The win came off the back of a standout game from Charlotte Brancatisano, who scored 23 points.

“Charlotte stepped up and shot the ball. The previous night she was reluctant to look at the open shot,” Herbert said. “We’ve seen growth in her game and we’ve talked about that as being the benchmark for her now.”

A dominant second quarter from the Supercats laid the foundation of the win, outscoring a depleted Albury side by 12 points.

The strength of the Supercats’ bench players was clear, with Ellen Kett (16 points) and Daniela Wallen (12 points) a major difference between the two teams.

“She (Wallen) was great. She may get that opportunity to start very soon,” he said.

Herbert said the SEABL schedule had been draining on players and coaching staff, with long interstate road trips thankfully behind them.

“I’m very grateful to win as many games as we have, considering our draw and the situation where we are travelling interstate all the time,” Herbert said.

“We went Sydney to Ballarat, then the following week to Launceston and Hobart — it’s been relentless so far. I just don’t think we got the right end of the draw this year.”
