Team in top five after 15-goal win

GEELONG Amateur coach Heidi Shaw has praised her side’s ability to adjust on the run after coming from behind to defeat Anglesea on Saturday.

Ammos now have a twogame buffer inside the top five after the 45-30 win at Queens Park.

Shaw said she was particularly happy with how her side turned the game around after a poor second quarter that turned a fivegoal quarter-time lead into a four-goal deficit at the main break.

“We started quite well, but we did lapse after quarter-time,” Shaw said.

“The girls are good at identifying lulls and when they really need to switch on, which they did well in the second half.

“We’re at the point where we can’t afford to lose any more games if we want a decent shot at playing finals. We weren’t taking them lightly.

“It’s important that we keep booking the wins.”

Next weekend’s game against a winless Portarlington outfit should be the opportunity to do just that.

Ammos’ defence was versatile and proved too strong for the Roos.

Goal keeper Keisha Guilmartin did well to shut down her taller opponent, while Carly Post injected movement into the side, enabling scoring opportunities from rebounds and turnovers.

Anglesea coach Rhonda Gugger praised the adaptability of the Ammos side.

“They’ve got great depth which allows bench rotation,” she said.

“We lost but we had a great game — to be five down after the first quarter but turn it around and be in front at halftime shows that we have the capacity.

“We just need to work on putting it together across four quarters.”

Gugger wants the Roos to capture the momentum they displayed in the second quarter and replicate it across an entire game next week against Queenscliff.

“The difference between the second quarter and the rest of the game was that we played how we wanted to play. Our defensive end was excellent,” she said.

“Rome wasn’t built in a day, but we showed our potential when we came back in the second quarter.”
