Talent to take the title

Interleague coach open to possibilities in tournament

- BFL

THE BFL will take an open mind into this Sunday’s Netball Victoria association championships, with coach Olivia Wilson saying it was too early to know how deep they could go in the tournament.

Wilson is expecting her formidable squad, led on court by veteran Geelong Amateur defender Keisha Guilmartin, to come up against some challenging opponents as they aim to go one better than last year.

“It really depends, you need to get up there and see who you’re coming up Wilson said.

“We were in the final with Bendigo last year but I’m tipping Geelong is going to have a strong side, so it will be pretty much a waiting game.

“I can put a side out and it will be fine and then we can just keep rotating and keep fresh legs so we’re not overusing certain players. But it will just be whether we’re good enough on the day.”

The attacking end of the BFL side will consist of players from three different clubs, with Mon Adams (Barwon Heads), Abbey Middleton (Ocean against,” Grove) and Kate Schippers (Geelong Amateur) given the responsibility to help put a winning score on the board.

Wilson said the single training session the squad has this week was all about getting to know the strengths and weaknesses of each player in the side.

“Some girls don’t know some of the others, so it’s about getting to know who is in the team and working on partnerships,” she said.

“We went through some systems that we can address on Sunday, not that it always goes to plan but it gives us a base to go from so they are working well together.

“Hopefully, they come together well. There are some good players but sometimes good players don’t jell, so hopefully they do.

“There are a couple of girls from the same club in there and some have played together previously in interleague. But there are some new ones and at the goaling end it is very new, so we’re just working them together.”

The championships will be held at the State Netball and Hockey Centre, with games kicking off at 9am.
