Betts: I’ll see out contract

- VAL MIGLIACCIO

STAR Adelaide forward Eddie Betts has pledged to see out the remainder of his three-year contract and will end his career at the club as whispers of discontent swirl around last year’s Grand Final side.

But Betts did question why he was still playing the game.

He was the latest player named as unhappy after a report claimed he was put under personal and emotional pressure at the Crows’ controversial pre-season camp.

After Mitch McGovern’s management team yesterday denied the forward wanted to leave after inking a three-year deal late last year, Betts hosed down speculation he too was considering leaving. “That’s not true,’’ Betts said. “I love the footy club and since I moved across here the club and the town itself has treated me really, really well.

“I can’t see myself going anywhere else. I want to finish my career at the Crows.

“I’ve still got two years on my contract.”

Betts said the controversial Collective Minds component of the pre-season camp didn’t have any bearing on his thinking.

He was more concerned about his physical wellbeing.

“People get a lot out of Collective Minds and some people don’t,’’ he said.

“I got a fair bit out of it and I’m happy where I am at the moment.

“At times it was more about my body. I felt like why am I playing, why I am doing this because my body feels like it’s not holding up.

“But I guess having kids and a beautiful family, it gives me a reason to play footy. I’ll play until my body tells me I can’t play anymore because I love footy.”

Betts also refused to name and shame the teenager who directed a racist slur at the indigenous star because he was worried the young man concerned would be bullied.

The 31-year-old was vilified on an Instagram account that tagged Betts mingling with fans in Perth after the Crows’ three-point loss.
