UNITED STAND

CASH-STRAPPED GALAXY TO FIGHT ON

- RYAN REYNOLDS

GEELONG’S Galaxy United has vowed to fight its way out of the financial crisis that has threatened to destroy the club. Committee members of the NPL Women’s soccer club have met with parents and players to discuss the current money woes, which have forced the club to cut back spending in the second half of this season. Galaxy’s problems had been brewing for the best part of 12 months before coming to a head last week. Senior players were recently told they could not be covered for travel and training expenses for the rest of the season, with the club forced to drastically cut back its spending or face going under. But the outcome of a follow-up meeting was positive, with loyal Galaxy members promising to stick with the club.

“It’s all positive. The members accepted the stance the club has taken and they support that,” Galaxy president Rob Lehmann said.

“We have committed to banding together and finishing out the season strong and moving forward into next year.

“It’s one of those things. You have a blip, everyone bands together and then you work your way through it. The important thing from the board was that the commitment was there from the members.”

Galaxy United is Geelong’s top women’s soccer club, playing in the state’s premier competition, and features players with international experience.

Lehmann said he spoke to the senior players before Saturday’s 2-1 loss to South Melbourne and he has been given no indication that any players were looking for the exit door during this month’s transfer window.

Given the WNPL is an amateur competition, players can only be paid for travel and training expenses and a number of Galaxy stars commute from Melbourne to play.

“We reinforced that they are all part of the Galaxy family and all required and wanted at the club. Their contribution to date has been valued and we hope they continue that relationship in the future,” he said.

“There’s been no indication that anyone is jumping ship.”

Lehmann said the club had no plan to put its hand out for money from Football Federation Victoria or the Surf Coast Shire. They will instead try to attract new sponsors.
