RACE ALLEGATION IN STUDENT FOOTY ATTACK
GEELONG and Haileybury colleges are investigating an alleged racially-motivated attack during a football game that left a Geelong College student with serious injuries.
Ngor Aker required treatment for a jaw fracture, loose front teeth, and deep cuts on his gum and lip following the alleged attack from a Haileybury College opponent behind play.
“I wasn’t expecting it and as soon as it happened I just got down on my knees and felt my mouth and saw a bunch of blood was coming out,” Ngor told Nine News.
Ngor said he was subjected to racial taunts from his Haileybury opponent leading up to the attack on Saturday.
“The bloke turned around and said ‘Watch out, you’ve got a shadow following you’.
“I walked up to him and said ‘Are you trying to be racist?’
“And he’s like ‘Yeah I am, what are you going to do?’ And I started pushing him.”
Ngor, 17, described the attack as “disgraceful” and embarrassing.
“No one deserves to be treated the way I was — it’s 2018, we should be moving on from this.”
The Haileybury player was sent off the ground following the attack and did not return.
It is unclear if Haileybury College will decide on a punishment for its student on its own or with input from Geelong College.
Ngor’s mother, Chagai Gum Malong, said the incident was “painful” to watch, adding that “No one deserves to be put down because they were born a certain way”.
Geelong College and Haileybury College are members of the Associated Public Schools of Victoria.
An APS staff member told the Geelong Advertiser it would be left up to the schools to decide on the attacker’s punishment as it did not operate a tribunal.
Geelong College principal Peter Miller said the school was “shocked and saddened” by the incident.
“There is also an allegation of racial vilification by the other (Haileybury) player directed at Ngor under investigation,” i ti ” DrMiller Dr Miller said said.
“We have been involved in collecting information to assist an investigation into the incident. The Geelong College community is focused on supporting (the Aker family) and seeing to Ngor’s return to school, and good health, as soon as possible.”
Haileybury College principal Derek Scott said: “The incident that occurred on June 16 is currently being investigated by the school and we cannot comment further.”
