STAIRWAY TO HAVEN

- PETER FARAGO

SOME absolute real estate gems on the Great Ocean Road slipped past the council’s gaze decades ago at Fairhaven.

Perhaps the most famous is the Fairhaven house used as Max Rockatansky’s home in the seminal Australian road movie, Mad Max, which is one of two built on the beach side of the Great Ocean Road.

But Great Ocean Properties, Aireys Inlet agent Marty Maher said just down the road are two more where staircases were built down to the Great Ocean Road before the council realised it was a problem.

Mr Maher explained the council cottoned on to the builds in the 1980s and quickly banned any more from building steps on to the famed drive.

This property is actually addressed as 32 Banool Rd, above the Great Ocean Road.

The property is going to auction on July 14. Price expectations are $2.95 million to $3.1 million.

“This stunning front row Fairhaven property has been in the same family ownership since the 1950s and has seen several generations enjoy the property,” Mr Maher said.

“This property has evolved from a very modest log cabin into the beautiful beach house it is today over the years.

“One of the most prized features is the direct beach access via a staircase that is on the property. There’s only one other property in that area that enjoys this feature.

“This area is very tightly held, with only 23 front row properties in this precinct with one of these being the iconic Pole House.”

Labelling the three-bedroom, twobathroom house the ultimate coastal retreat is not gilding the lily. This house occupies an incredible position overlooking the surf break with a view that extends beyond to Lorne.

Mr Maher said the Hamptons style was most evident in the living area with painted timber cathedral ceilings, an ornate fireplace and feature light fittings hanging in positions above the vista.
