Oh brother, Guthries sign new contracts

- NICK WADE

THE Guthrie family affair will continue at Geelong for at least the next two years after their joint signings were confirmed last night.

Cam Guthrie, 25, has sidestepped free agency to sign a three-year extension at the Cats, while younger brother Zach, 19, has accepted a new two-year deal.

It means the brothers will remain at the club until at least 2021 and 2020.

“Cam and Zach are two individuals heavily invested in the Geelong football program, and their commitment to the club speaks volumes to their character,” Geelong football manager Simon Lloyd said.

“Cam’s talent, versatility, and his ability to influence games with strong decision- making and high skill level are all exciting prospects for the club as we move into the future. Zach has demonstrated a high level of commitment and professionalism since arriving at Geelong.

“He consistently strives to improve, and over a short period, has had AFL finals experience and we are very excited about his prospects.

“We see Cam and Zach as playing key roles at Geelong into the future.”

Last night’s announcement confirms yesterday’s Geelong Advertiser report that a new deal for Cam Guthrie was imminent after agreeing to terms in recent days.

The Guthrie brothers join Mark Blicavs as the Cats’ most recent signings, leaving Daniel Menzel, Jackson Thurlow, Cory Gregson, Rhys Stanley, Lincoln McCarthy, Jordan Murdoch and Aaron Black among the other notable Geelong players out of contract.

Cam Guthrie, who was a restricted free agent, is closing in on an AFL return, after getting through two VFL matches in his comeback from an ankle injury.
