Cougars on the prowl

- LACHIE YOUNG VICTORIAN NETBALL LEAGUE

LOCAL netball fans will have the chance to see some of Geelong’s best players tomorrow night when the Geelong Cougars host Melbourne University Lightning at Christian College.

Cougars coach Gerard Murphy says much has changed in the eight weeks since his team fell to the ladder leaders in Round 2, with supporters likely to see a very different outfit this time around.

“It was a big change that game because it was a relatively new team,” Murphy said.

“The first game we had a lot of our ANL players and then they all progressed into their competition, so it was really our first game with a new group. Over the last eight weeks we have been progressing really well and working together as a unit, so that should put us in a much better position for the game to be more prepared and hopefully get revenge.

“I think it will be a really good game and clearly they have a lot of depth and quality but I think we are in with a chance, that is for sure.”

The Cougars sit fourth on the VNL table with a game in hand but after copping a fourpoint penalty last week for an administrative error they need every win they can muster to avoid slipping out of the finals race.

South Barwon shooting sensation Ruby Horton could be an inclusion for tomorrow’s clash, with Murphy saying his team had the chance to test itself in the coming weeks.

“We played against one of the top teams last week, this week we have got another top team and next week we play City West Falcons, so we have got three games against top four teams in a row

“After that we play against the bottom four teams so we’re hopeful we can maintain our form and stay up there.

“It was unfortunate we lost four points … but if we win we’ll go up and be one game away from Melbourne Uni, so that’s a really good position to be in if we can get the win this week.”

Three games will be played tomorrow night, with the under-19s starting at 6.30pm, the championship match at 7.50pm and the division one clash kicking off at 9.10pm.
