Family’s farewell

YELLOW, red and orange flowers adorned the coffin of Melbourne woman Eurydice Dixon yesterday as mourners gathered to celebrate the life of the budding comedian found dead in a Carlton park.

Family and friends gathered to farewell the 22-year-old, who was raped and murdered last week in a crime that has sparked national outrage.

Many of the 100 mourners were clad in black and shed tears as they embraced, and consoled each other, but some also shared a laugh.

Ms Dixon’s great-uncle Eric Dixon, sister ster Polly Cotton, drama a teacher Tracy Carroll and five ve friends are understood to have spoken during the private funeral l service.

The order of service showed d images of a young, ung, smiling Eurydice ice and her on stage in n a polka-dot dress.

Pictures of You, by The Cure, and Johnny Cash’s We’ll Meet Again were among songs on the playlist at the private service in Brunswick.

Ms Dixon’s body was found on a soccer field in Princes Park after she made a late- n night, w walk home alo alone on June 12, when she perf performed at the Highland Highlander Bar. Her death has prompted comment from political leaders across the country, including Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. State Women’s Affairs Minister Natalie Hutchins said Australia was enduring a “gendered violence crisis”, with 30 women already murdered this year.

“(Eurydice) was denied her right to get home safely, she was denied her right to life,” Ms Hutchins told parliament .

Thousands of people attended vigils in Ms Dixon’s honour this week, including one at Princes Park where her body was found.

Jaymes Todd, 19 of Broadmeado­ws, has been charged with her rape and murder.
