Renew Geelong concept closer

- RUSTY WOODGER

A PLAN to revitalise Geelong’s empty buildings with short-term projects is edging closer to fruition.

The Renew Geelong initiative is calling for expressions of interest from individuals and groups who are keen to use vacant spaces for creative projects within central Geelong.

The scheme will provide rolling 30-day free leases for creative enterprises in an effort to breathe life into underused precincts, while also giving emerging artists and performers a platform to showcase their talent.

It mirrors a similar initiative in Newcastle that has been credited with revitalising the city’s downtown.

Renew Australia manager Angela Simons said interest in the Geelong project had been “overwhelming”, with numerous property owners already committed to the concept.

“We aim to reinvigorate less appreciated areas of central Geelong and develop creative pockets that attract visitation from residents and tourists alike,” she said.

Acting Geelong mayor Peter Murrihy said the initiative removed the risk for people wanting to take their ideas to the next level.

“We strongly encourage individuals and groups with an idea for creating or producing goods, services or events to consider this exceptional opportunity,” he said.

“Renew Geelong will offer a safety net for artists and other creative individuals and connect them with mentoring and skills development to help turn great ideas into successful enterprises.”

While tenants are offered spaces free of charge, the deal is subject to a nominal fee for public and product liability insurance.

The $300,000 project has been propped up with equal funding from the State Government and the City of Greater Geelong.
