Teen says time is right

After stunner against Denmark, Arzani ready for Peru

- DAVID DAVUTOVIC

TEENAGE sensation Daniel Arzani looms as a starting prospect for the Socceroos’ 2018 World Cup decider against Peru and says he has “more to give”.

Arzani, 19, caused Denmark mass headaches after coming on for Robbie Kruse in the 68th minute, unleashing a topquality shot, cross — from a stunning dribble — and was a whisker away from an assist for Aaron Mooy.

Socceroos coach Bert van Marwijk has been cagey regarding individuals and particularly with regards to Arzani, but even he hinted at the possibility of the youngest player in Russia starting on Tuesday.

Bright-eyed Arzani said a first XI berth was the coach’s call but admitted his confidence was growing and was his own harshest critic after a late shot that forced a strong save from Kasper Schmeichel in the 1-1 draw.

“I have no idea (if he will start). I’ll just work as hard as I can and it’s the boss’s choice. These are not decisions for me to make. I’m just doing my thing,’’ Arzani said.

“I had a big chance in the end there and I feel I should’ve put that away. If I just hit that on the ground it would’ve either gone to the left of the keeper or gone through his legs.

“Definitely (my confidence is growing). You go out there and see it, and think to yourself, well, everyone’s human. Even the top players in the world are making mistakes and you kind of relate to that and it gives you confidence.

“There’s a lot more responsibility when you’re coming on for your country and I feel I’ve handled that okay.

“But I still feel like I have a lot to offer.”

Van Marwijk left the door open for a grand World Cup starting entrance in Sochi. “Everyone knows he (Arzani) is a big talent,” van Marwijk said.

“I trust his qualities. He has to learn a lot. I trust him. He is talented and an intelligent player. It’s good for him to play for 25 minutes. I will see what I do for him next game.”

Arzani, whose run and movement ensured Denmark stayed pinned back, ended up on the opposite flank when he bamboozled Pione Sisto before firing in a dangerous low cross that clean bowled everyone.
