Lady Hawks steal win

- TOM McFARLANE

DRYSDALE coach Stuart Craven wasn’t convinced his side played at its best despite the Lady Hawks overcoming a 14-point deficit at three quarter-time to defeat Grovedale yesterday.

The Tigers managed to have their noses in front for most of the match until Drysdale stormed home in the final term to take the lead, with Grovedale offering no counter punch as the Lady Hawks won 5.8.38 to 4.3.27.

VFL-listed Richmond player Gabrielle Deller (two goals) was a dominant force in the midfield, winning a lot of the contested ball as she lifted her side into top-three contention in division two.

“We didn’t play really well at all for the first three quarters, so I was pretty disappointed, but they just kept coming,” Craven said post-match.”

Craven said he implored his forward line to stand up in the fourth quarter, saying they were “really ordinary” during the early parts of the match.

He also said he had no issue with AFL Barwon’s divisional shake up, that including dropping the Lady Hawks to division two.

“We were battling in the first division, there’s no doubt about that, but we certainly would’ve stayed there, we’re not really fussed about the divisions, we just want to play footy,” he said.

Grovedale coach Ben O’Regan praised his backline, particularly for their role in the final quarter as the Tigers were under immense pressure and said the now secondplaced Tigers will learn from the loss.

O’Regan said Jenny Male (two goals), Maddison Giles, Jasmine Anderson and back pocket Kimberley Prince were the standouts.

MEANWHILE, Ocean Grove smashed Lara in Friday night’s clash thanks to a fourgoal to nil opening term.

Lara was restricted to one goal as Ocean Grove continued to climb the ladder thanks to the 78-point win.

Barwon Heads dominated the second half to run away with a 49-point win over Bell Post Hill. Barwon Heads led by just four points at the main break but the Seagulls came away big winners thanks to an eight-goal second half.

In the other division two game, Colac Imperials defeated St Joseph’s, with Tegan Barber again prominent in attack. Imperials jumped to the top of the table with the 43-point win.

In division one, North Geelong defeated St Mary’s by 55 points.

Alisha Habib was a dangerous option up forward, finishing with six goals as the Magpies used a four-goal third term to build a big lead.

Geelong Amateur defeated Geelong West after holding it goalless in the first half.
