Jail and bail for ex-Roo
FORMER AFL star Shannon Grant spent just two hours in custody yesterday after he immediately appealed over a jail sentence imposed for repeated assaults.
Grant, 41, pleaded guilty to assaulting a woman on several occasions, including stomping on her bare foot after she got out of a bath at a Victorian resort.
But the North Melbourne premiership player immediately appealed against the sixmonth prison sentence and was granted bail.
Grant faced Moorabbin Magistrates Court and admitted assaulting the woman at his house in Highett, a suburban beach and a Yarra Valley spa and resort.
At the resort Grant stomped on her bare foot with his heel before knocking her to the ground, causing her to hit her head and elbow on the hard bathroom floor.
Before each incident Grant had tried to snatch the woman’s phone, suspecting she had been texting other men, the court was told.
Magistrate Thomas Barrett jailed Grant after he pleaded guilty to three assault charges and one count of recklessly causing injury. The victim was left with bruising on her foot, elbow and face and had ongoing physical injuries as well as psychological trauma.
Defence lawyer Nicole Spicer said Grant had been having issues with alcohol and managing his emotions, and was sorry and deeply ashamed.
She had urged the magistrate to give Grant a community corrections order, saying he had already lost his job as coach of St Kevin’s Old Boys since his arrest.
Grant was taken into custody by guards and later released by the same magistrate.
