Dixon memorial vandalism charges

-

A MELBOURNE man has been charged over vandalism to a memorial for slain comedian Eurydice Dixon.

Police arrested a 31-yearold Bulleen man yesterday, less than a fortnight after paint was used to deface a Carlton North sports field where Ms Dixon was found raped and murdered on June 13.

The offensive markings were discovered on June 18 — the morning of a planned vigil — painted on the soccer pitch where mourners had placed flowers and tributes in honour of the dead 22-year-old.

Fire crews used high-pressure hoses to remove the paint, and the public vigil went ahead, with thousands turning out to pay their respects to the aspiring comedian.

Police at the time vowed to catch those responsible.

“You’re not a brave man if you assault a woman, you’re not a strong man if you assault a woman, you’re not a smart man if you assault a woman,” Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said.

And “if you engage in that sort of graffiti”, you’re none of those things either, he added.

The alleged vandal has been charged with criminal damage, offensive behaviour and offensive graffiti. He is due to face court on August 10 after being granted bail.

Ms Dixon was killed on her way home from the Highlander Bar in the CBD on June 12.
