Alleged car chase teen in custody

- RUSTY WOODGER

A TEEN who allegedly led police on a dangerous chase through Geelong before crashing will spend at least another six weeks behind bars.

Jacob Callick appeared via video link in Geelong Magistrates’ Court yesterday where he was refused bail.

The 18-year-old has been in custody since May 16, when the car he was allegedly driving crashed near Balyang Sanctuary in Newtown while fleeing from police. He is facing numerous charges including reckless conduct endangering life.

In the minutes prior to the crash, police allege Mr Callick sped south on Thompson Rd from North Geelong and veered onto the wrong side of the road. After merging onto Shannon Ave, the car allegedly ran a red light and reached 120km/h in a 50km/h zone.

Police eventually caught up to the car after it crashed into an embankment and landed on its roof near Marnock Rd.

They arrested Mr Callick at the scene, before he was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The court heard police found 4.29g of ice in the car, with Mr Callick allegedly admitting to trafficking the drug to feed his own addiction.

Defence lawyer Caetlyn Wells-Simon said the charges against the teenager had resolved, with a plea hearing set for August 17.

In pushing for bail, Ms Wells-Simon said the 48 days Mr Callick had already served in custody were potentially within range of an appropriate sentence. While Ms McGarvie said she agreed in principle, she said recent changes to the Bail Act meant Mr Callick needed to show “exceptional” reasons for early release.

“There’s nothing I can really see that is indeed out of the ordinary (in this case),” Ms McGarvie said.

Mr Callick was remanded in custody until the plea hearing.
