Girl, 14, bailed after multiple theft claims

A 14-YEAR-OLD girl has been granted bail despite police arguing she continually breaches court-imposed orders.

The girl is accused of breaking into a car in South Geelong on June 24, one day after being released from a youth justice centre. She has also been charged with five thefts committed around Geelong in March and April.

In those incidents, she allegedly stole a Sony speaker, a wallet, multiple phones and alcohol.

The teenager was already on four separate supervisory orders when she was arrested last week, including probation and two counts of bail.

In a children’s court yesterday, a police prosecutor strongly opposed bail being granted again, saying the girl constantly breached conditions, including a nighttime curfew.

The court heard the girl was released from a 30-day sentence in Parkville one day before allegedly stealing a phone and two wallets from a car in Park Crescent, South Geelong.

The teen’s lawyer said it was a “somewhat opportunistic” offence and that the girl claimed her friends stole the items, while she stood nearby.

“It’s got to the stage, if she does these things, locking her up is part of the deal,” he said.

But he said the girl should be granted bail given her young age and the fact she could live in a DHHS facility with supervision.

The magistrate decided to free the girl from custody despite noting concerns she had breached “every order” that had been imposed on her.

The girl will return to court later this month.
