Socceroos look ahead after World Cup washout

IT’S good to be back in Torquay, even if it is earlier than what we all would have wanted.

Obviously no one wants to get bundled out of the World Cup in the group stage and certainly no one wants to finish at the bottom of their group.

We put in some really good performances against France and Denmark, but the loss to Peru was really hard to take.

Was our World Cup a success? I guess you would deem it a failure due to us coming last in the group. The mood in the dressing rooms was quite sombre after the Peru loss.

Timmy Cahill and Mile Jedinak addressed the players, letting them know they should feel proud of their achievements. They urged the group to work hard over the next four years to make sure we do better in Qatar.

Our coach Bert van Marwijk was very proud of the boys and let them know they did everything he asked them to do ... except score.

He also said they deserved more for their efforts and didn’t get any luck.

On a personal level, the World Cup was class. The streets were buzzing with World Cup fever and secur- ity was tight, which allowed everyone to feel safe.

We didn’t really get to interact with any of the other staff members from the other competing countries, although we did have a chance to say g’day before kick-off.

It’s hard to believe it’s another four years until we hopefully get to go to another World Cup.

While some of the boys in this year’s squad won’t be around for it, I’m confident I’ve got another in me!

But for now it’s back to beautiful Torquay and my Grasshopper Soccer clinics where I hope to unearth the next Mile, Timmy or Tommy.
