A shot at the big time

-

LOCAL rising golf stars Lachie Bath and Matt McFarlane have been handed the opportunity of a lifetime, securing a 12-month scholarship with sand belt course Metropolitan.

The talented duo were the only two locals selected, giving them access to the course and the club’s facilities.

Curlewis’ McFarlane said he wanted to use the opportunity to push his way into Metropolitan’s junior pennant squad.

“It would be really great to try and get into the pennant squads, the juniors and hopefully the colts,” McFarlane said.

“If I can get into those then that would be very good.

“The practice facilities are really good and they will really improve my golf.”

Winchelsea’s Bath, who has been the region’s nett order of merit champion for the past two years, said the scholarship would have a significant impact on his game.

“Going to an elite course in Melbourne, practising, playing, getting experience in different conditions (will be crucial),” Bath said.

“I want to grow my game in some different aspects, play some more tournaments up there with different people and hopefully use that as the stepping stone for my golf.”

Bath currently plays off four, while McFarlane is off two.

“I have had a bit of a crook back. I am just coming back from it, so I’m slowly improving which is nice but it’s a work in progress,” Bath said.

“I’m working on my consistency and tightening up all aspects of my game.

“My goal is to be scratch by the end of the year, but it’s more where my game is at rather than my handicap.”
