Coma coach’s divorce
THE wife of accused paedophile Nick Philippoussis is filing for divorce, even though her husband is on his death bed in a San Diego hospital.
Speaking for the first time since Philippoussis’s arrest last July — and subsequent charges of molesting two nineyear-old girls — distressed Yan Cui confirmed the split.
“I’ve posted the divorce papers,” she said.
“As a woman, you have to understand I have nothing else to say right now”.
Ms Yan married Philippoussis more than seven years ago, after he split from Rosanna.
His criminal defence lawyer said the ex-tennis coach was “unlikely to ever see daylight again, let alone stand trial”.
Philippoussis, 69, who faces life in jail if convicted, is so unwell he is no longer under police guard at the hospital.
But Judge Michael Washington has refused to drop the case, only agreeing to lift his $11.7 million bail.
“He’s pretty much comatosed, we’re not really sure what to do,” his lawyer Ryan Tegnelia said.
Philippoussis’ tennis champion son Mark, nicknamed Scud, is standing by his father.
“Mark has a lot of contact with him and of course still loves him,” Mr Tegnelia said.
Philippoussis Sr is charged with 14 counts, including oral copulation/sexual penetration with a child under 10 and lewd acts upon a child.
He pleaded not guilty before suffering the stroke in November at the San Diego County Jail.
