Aussie trio in their element when big swell arrives
THE women’s event at Jeffreys Bay has extended well into its waiting period, with a week-long flat spell hitting the famous point break.
The good news: tomorrow is forecast to be an absolute spectacular finish to the event with a large perfect swell hitting South Africa.
They are down to the quarter-finals and Australia has three great chances in the mix.
Stephanie Gilmore is the obvious favourite here. She loves long peeling right-hand point waves and that is exactly what will be served up.
Victoria’s Nikki Van Dijk is also a serious chance.
The wave at Jeffreys Bay has a lot in common with Winkipop and things such as water temperature, cold winds and rugged conditions will have Van Dijk feeling extremely comfortable.
Bronte Macaulay from Western Australia is our other hope and she’ll also be suited to the large powerful swell.
With Lakey Peterson, Carissa Moore and Tatiana Western Webb all in the quar- ters it should be an epic showdown.
For those keen to watch, tune in about 4pm our time and watch J-Bay deliver incredible waves that should peel for close to 500m.
Another event to keep an eye on this week is the Padang Cup in Bali. This specialty event is held over one day and waits for an ideal swell to hit. Incredibly, it is expected to run around Sunday or Monday and it will run on the exact same swell that hits J-Bay on Friday.
The Padang Cup is one of the most perfect barrelling lefts in the world and includes a field of great surfers. Today and tomorrow look average, with variable winds and dropping swells but the weekend and into next week are looking excellent on reefs right along the coast.
