Mount Gambier crushed

- WILL HOGAN SEABL BASKETBALL

A COMPREHENSIVE allround performance from the Supercats has elevated their top-four claims after defeating Mount Gambier 89-72 away last night.

The emphatic win has given the Supercats a clean sweep over last year’s championship winners and could also prevent the SEABL powerhouse from making the final eight as the race for a finals spot becomes even tighter.

It was a clinical display from the entire Supercats roster, with Leon O’Neill putting faith in his bench players who all got considerable playing minutes.

O’Neill said pre-game his ideal plan would be to share the workload to keep key players fresh for the clash against Bendigo at the Arena tonight and he got his wish with eight players reaching over 10 minutes in game time.

The Supercats led at all breaks and seemed like they would be convincing winners from the outset scoring 27 points in the first quarter.

A gallant second quarter from Mount Gambier brought the margin back to two points at half time thanks to some impressive shooting from beyond the arc but it was all Supercats from there.

Kris Blicavs scored a workmanlike 10 points but it was his performance on the defensive end that stood out, forcing an errant lay-up a number of times during critical stages in the second and third quarter.

Jamie Medved provided the offensive spark off the bench with 10 points including two three-pointers from two attempts.

It was the usual suspects that also performed strongly for the Supercats with DeMarcus Gatlin (21 points), Nathan Herbert (16 points) and John Davis (12 points) all proficient with ball in hand, while Liam McInerney enjoyed some extra game-time, chipping in with eight points.

A win tonight against the Braves would bode well for their top-four aspirations before facing bottom-placed Canberra in the final round next week.
