Call of nature saves Corio boy, 9, as car destroys room

- OLIVIA SHYING

A TOILET break has saved the life of a nine-year-old boy who was answering the call of nature when a car ploughed into his Corio bedroom and came to rest on the bed he had been sleeping in just minutes earlier.

A TOILET break has saved the life of a nine-year-old boy.

Nature can call at any hour but the Corio boy’s timing was spot-on when he left his bedroom to go to the bathroom minutes before a car ploughed into the Chaffey Square property, landing to rest on his bed. Minutes earlier he had been fast asleep.

The boy, who the Geelong Advertiser has chosen not to name, was in the toilet when he heard a loud bang at about 1am.

Startled, he returned to his room to find a vehicle protruding through his bedroom door.

The boy’s mum, dad and younger siblings — a six-yearold girl and 14-month-old toddler — were asleep in nearby rooms and woke, fearing the worst.

The frightening crash was one of two similar incidents to occur in Geelong in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The boy’s mum said she heard the crash and took a couple of minutes to work out that her son was OK.

Police allege a 17-year-old learner driver was travelling on Chaffey Square when he lost control around a bend just before 1am and crashed into the house.

The alleged driver of the car is assisting police with their inquiries and is expected to be charged on summons with a string of offences including careless driving, driving an unregistered vehicle and unaccompanied learner driving.

About two hours later, emergency services were called to another incident after reports of a car crashing into a house in Belmont.

It is believed the car drove through an intersection and into the front of a home at about 3.20am.

Darren Ryan was asleep in the back bedroom of his Reynolds Rd house and woke when the television fell from the wall and crashed to the ground.

He wandered out of his room to investigate and saw a Ford Territory had ploughed through his front gate, broken through the brick exterior and was partly in his front lounge room.

“I heard the TV fall off and heard this noise,” Mr Ryan said.

“I saw the was a lady in the car — a Territory.”

Mr Ryan checked to see if the driver of the car was OK and emergency services responded quickly.

“It doesn’t bother me — insurance will cover it,” he said.

Mr Ryan said he was thankful his children were not at the property at the time of the accident.

No one was injured during the incident.

The driver, a 32-year-old Anglesea woman, was spoken to by police.

The investigation is ongoing.
